Six models, one table

Over two weeks in July the whole studio built white models of the six projects on our boards, mostly at 1:100, and put them on one table to compare them.

In July we cleared the long table in the studio and spent two weeks building a white model of every project we have on the boards. There are six of them, and most are at 1:100, which is small enough to hold in two hands and large enough to show a window.

The aim was simple. We draw and render constantly, but we had never seen all six buildings side by side. Putting them next to each other taught us more than we expected.

What the table showed

  • Roofs set the family resemblance. The pitched wings of Ridge School, the zinc plates of Quarry Pavilion and the folded plate of Ferry Terminal sit comfortably on one table.

  • Tannery Lofts is the largest model, but Quarry Pavilion, with less than a tenth of its floor area, has the stronger presence.

  • The models showed us where we had been vague about a parapet or an eave, long before it would have mattered on site.

Ingrid Hansen photographed the group in daylight and again in low evening light, and we pinned both sets beside the drawings. The models now live on a shelf in the studio, and visitors are welcome to pick them up. They are made of card and a lot of patience, and every one of them is open at the back.
